WHAT IS A PRECINCT CAUCUS?

Precinct caucuses are meetings run by Minnesota’s political parties. They are the first in a series of meetings where parties will select delegates, endorse candidates, and set goals and values (called party platforms).

WHY ATTEND YOUR PRECINCT CAUCUS?

The precinct caucus isn’t about “politics” as much as it’s about community and civic involvement. It’s where you meet people who are working to protect our values, strengthen our neighborhoods, and elect Republicans who will lead with integrity.

If you want to feel hopeful and connected again, caucus is where it starts. Caucus is where YOU can become a part of the process!

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CAUCUS?

Choose DELEGATES who will endorse candidates at future conventions.

Choose VOLUNTEERS who will organize political activities in the precinct. This could include maintaining contact lists, holding political meetings, and helping with campaign efforts.

Discuss issues and ideas for the party to support. You can present an issue or idea for the party to support, called a resolution. If you convince other attendees to support your resolution, it will be taken to the next political convention. Eventually, your resolution could become part of the official party platform.

Vote in a Governor’s Straw Poll.

WHAT ABOUT THESE DELEGATES?  CONFUSING?  NO ... it doesn't have to be!

Step 1 … Attend Caucus on Feb 3rd for your Senate District (otherwise called a Basic Political Operating Unit or BPOU). The attendees will be broken down into geographic neighborhoods, called Precincts. There might be 20 Precincts in each Senate District. Each Precinct will elect about 10 Senate District / BPOU Delegates. THAT CAN BE YOU! Raise your hand, get elected, and get involved! At the end of the evening on the 3rd, each Senate District / BPOU will have elected roughly 200 Delegates.

Step 2 … These 200 Senate District / BPOU Delegates will now attend the Senate District / BPOU Convention to be held between Feb 14th thru Mar 28th. At this Senate District / BPOU Convention, as a Delegate you will (i) endorse Republican candidates for MN Senate and MN House, (ii) consider Platform amendments, and (iii) ELECT about 30 Delegates that will move forward to the Congressional District Convention in April and then to the MN GOP State Convention in May. If you want to continue to participate, you will want to become one of these 30 CD / State Convention Delegates. Go to your Senate District / BPOU Convention with a 1-minute speech, explaining to the gathered attendees why you would make a great CD / State Convention Delegate.

Step 3 … As an elected CD / State Convention Delegate, you will attend the Congressional District Convention in April. You will endorse your Republican Congressional candidate and consider Platform amendments.

Step 4 … As an elected CD / State Convention Delegate, you will attend the MN GOP State Convention in May. You will endorse Republican Candidates for U.S. Senate and for all Statewide offices … Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and State Auditor. You will also consider Platform amendments.

These Delegates (both the Senate District / BPOU Delegates AND the CD / State Convention Delegates) are elected for a two-year term.
